Masoor Dal with Tadka-Instant Pot or Stovetop

A delicious and rich South Asian Soup made with Red lentils. Soup is simmered with turmeric, and chillies then tempered with whole spices known as Tadka.

Ingredients
  

  • cups Masoor Daal rinsed and drained
  • 4 cups Water
  • 1 Tomato chopped
  • 1 to 2 Serrano peppers cut in half, lengthwise
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • ¾ tsp Turmeric powder
For Tempering (Tadka)
  • 3 tbsp Neutral oil
  • 4 to 5 Dry Red Chillies
  • 3 to 4 Curry Leaves
  • tsp Cumin Seeds
  • tsp Mustard Seeds

Method
 

  1. Add 4 cups water along with 1.5 cups of Masoor Dal in Instant Pot.
  2. Now add the chopped Tomato along with the Green Chillies.
  3. Add Salt, Turmeric and mix.
  4. Now set Instant pot to pressure cook on Manual for 9 minutes. Make sure to turn vent to Seal.
  5. Natural Pressure release until Float Valve goes down.
  6. Now open lid and mix using a ladle , pushing the dal against the edges to blend.
  7. Set Instant Pot to Saute on Less and keep mixing every 2- 3 minutes to avoid burn.
  8. Next, heat a frying pan and add oil.
  9. Once oil is heated through , add dry red chili peppers.
  10. Toss continuously in oil for 1 to 2 minutes , then add Cumin and Mustard seeds.
  11. When smell starts wafting around, pour the oil into the Dal and cover with lid.
  12. After 2-3 minutes , open lid and mix.
  13. Serve over steamed rice, with Chapati, Naan or in a bowl with a spoon.

Notes

If you’re making this recipe on a stove.
Cook for 30 to 40 minutes on low heat before tempering
